The high reflectivity of some aluminium alloys makes it a very efficient material for light management. Aluminium solar collectors can be installed to lower energy consumption for artificial lighting and heating in winter, while aluminium shading devices can be used to reduce the need for air conditioning in summer. Beijing’s Sino-Italian Ecological & Energy Efficient Building (SIEEB) is the result of a co-operation between Italy and China.
It represents a platform to develop bilateral long-term collaboration in the fields of energy and environment and showcases the potential for reducing CO2 emissions from the building sector in China.
The aluminium curtain walling system is a vital component in delivering this holistic architecture. The building is closed and well insulated on the northern side that faces the cold winter winds and is more transparent and open towards the south.
On the east and west sides, light and direct sun are controlled by a double skin facade that filters solar gain and optimizes the penetration of daylight into the office spaces.
Attractive green spaces, gardens and terraces are distinctive elements of the project. Cantilevered structural elements extend to the south, giving shade to the terraces.
